Watch She's Beautiful When She's Angry Movie Online Now, DOC NYC has grown into the country’s largest non-fiction film festival in just its fifth annual incarnation, to three downtown venues offering more than a hundred selections, a number of them world premières. In Activism Section “Fight the Power” is She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, for which director, co-producer and archival researcher Mary Dore indicated it took decades to raise cash to complete, from before the birth of her now-twenty-one-year-old son, and even then much material has had to be left out. Watch She's Beautiful When She's Angry Online HQ, She introduced the ninety-two minutes and afterwards shared stage and long applause with five of her subjects for a Q&A. It is obvious why festival programmers had taken the unusual step of booking her documentary immediately after one single viewing. The anger and the beauty are stirring in this picture about the origins and the growth of modern, “second wave” feminism -- brief frames capture precursor Suffragettes of early last century. Thus, slightly later figures like Ms. co-founder Gloria Steinem, who has approved the film, are not considered. Of the couple dozen who do appear individually, footage moves viewers with the late Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Betty Friedan. Watch She's Beautiful When She's Angry Online in High Quality, Neither then nor now is the rest of the world brought into consideration as historical clips picture prevailing attitudes in the U.S. in beauty paraphernalia and pageants, patronizing and manipulative Hollywood and Madison Avenue images -- e.g., “You’re awful pretty when you get mad” and “You’ve come a long way, baby”--homemaker virtues, workplace etiquette, signs in bars. Leaders, “magnificent women, so great, so courageous,” appear from among “thousands of others who did the same thing” nameless in marches, bra burnings, wolf-whistle-at-Wall-Street-types or W.I.T.C.H./Women’s International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell-hexing them, protests, strategy brainstorming, fieldwork, and education. Those faces and names that are singled out also speak today, their wisdom of hindsight furnishing additional depth to and understanding of events. Watch She's Beautiful When She's Angry Online In HD, Some few do indicate disappointment at the present direction of matters but quickly add that each generation needs to fight anew for its rights.Chicago, Boston and New York are naturally epicenters of interest, recruiting and development, but as much as anywhere the spark was struck in the Bay Area, rising out of unrest at California universities, where radical movement males openly macho-marginalized coeds. Making their own groups, women went alongside and then beyond anti-war and free speech agitation -- to the National Organization for Women, Women’s Equity Action League, Women’s Political Caucus. As with many a sociopolitical upheaval, some not surprisingly moved even further into radicalism, such as Rita Mae Brown and the Lavender Menace disruption of the 1970 second Congress to Unite Woman. Watch She's Beautiful When She's Angry Online For With High Speed, The accumulating achievements so altered this nation that it is difficult to believe such change once even needed to be wrought. Just as Civil Rights evolved from concern with racial equality to take on the war in Southeast Asia, women’s lib expanded to embrace rights and respect for specific segments like African-American sisters, lesbians and working mothers. Emphasis was also placed on controversial gender-wide issues like birth control information, the Pill and (when discovered) its potentially dangerous side effects, unlimited access to abortion -- “Our Bodies, Our Lives”/“Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas” -- sexual harassment, equal pay and equal work, informed counseling, open discussion of and access to education about sexuality and the female body, and establishment of university-level women’s studies departments. Watch She's Beautiful When She's Angry Online in DVD, HD, The fate of the Equal Rights Amendment and continued strenuous opposition now forty-one years later to Roe v. Wade, backsliding along with items in nearly any day’s news, indicate that the struggle is far from finished and that in the face of complacency vigilance is necessary to protect what has been gained. To judge from SBWSA, new heroines, anonymous as well as celebrated, will take up the torch. Less heralded than many other documentaries, Dore’s should gain the audience it deserves by word of mouth.

Watch Life Partners Movie Online Now, “Life Partners” mines a few very real anxieties when it comes to the challenges of a long-term friendship. It’s not particularly sharp, but it’s warmly realized, with co-writer/director Susanna Fogel trying to communicate the precise moment when life is forever altered by love interests, vocational goals, and the general ticking of the clock. It’s an amusing picture with two likable performances from Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs, but seldom does it rise above its sitcom presentation, feeling a little too restrained with the interpersonal quandaries presented here. “Life Partners” is amiable, capably observed at times, but little of it sticks after a viewing. Watch Life Partners Online HQ, Best friends since they were children, Sasha (Leighton Meester) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs) are locked in their own world, facing the end of their twenties together as they struggle with the dating scene. Sasha wants a girlfriend, but can’t find a match, enjoying the comfort of Paige too much to find someone else. Paige has found Tim (Adam Brody), a graphic-tee-wearing, movie-quoting guy who treats her differently. Commencing a relationship with her new man, Paige is pulled away from Sasha, who’s not only facing loneliness, but the death of her dream to be a musician, resorting to toxic partners (Abby Elliot) to keep up appearances. While they try to maintain their friendship, it’s clear the two are drifting apart, while a few outside influences contribute to the divide, leaving Paige confused and Sasha heartsick over the whole situation. Watch Life Partners Online in High Quality, “Life Partners” begins with a fluffy dollop of cutesiness, highlighting Sasha and Paige’s favorite pastime: engaging in fake road rage confrontations in public (watching “America’s Next Top Model” together is a close second). It’s an effective way to establish history and comfort, holding out hope that everything in the picture will be approached with a sense of mischief and surprise. Unfortunately, Fogel (making her directorial debut) doesn’t show much interest in askew events, quickly coating the effort in a formulaic glaze, spotlighting a friendship that’s fractured by expected events in life and love. Thankfully, the screenplay doesn’t treat the characters as idiots, showing a real interest in their mental health as the situation goes from bad to worse. Watch Life Partners Online In HD, For Paige, a functional relationship with Tom offers an enticing new car smell, finding a man who’s respectful and loving, even if he insists on wearing awful t-shirts, also pushing his love of “The Big Lebowski” on a woman who shows no interest. Sasha is frustrated with the dating scene, her job as a receptionist, and her aspirations to be a musician, finding her relationship with Paige helping her to ignore the shortcomings of her life, which amplifies the shock of loss when it’s clear her pal’s attentions have moved over to Tim. The panic of being left behind, of being replaced, is keenly observed in “Life Partners,” emphasizing the pressures of exiting an age-range of frivolous pursuits and habitual denial, soon left with a crushing realization that self-motivation may be the only option left. After years buffered by companionship and happy hours, the women are finally faced with growing up, and it’s not an idea that’s particularly appealing. Watch Life Partners Online For With High Speed, The Minneapolis-set, L.A.-shot story unfolds as expected, with antagonisms flaring up into fights, alienating friends (including Gabourey Sidibe and Beth Dover) and keeping social engagements frosty. A few asides are meant to reinforce the fight of responsibility the women are facing, including Paige’s refusal to pay for damages incurred while she was texting while driving. “Life Partners” feels too slavish to predictability at times, with Sasha turning to food for comfort and there’s a break-up-to-make-up conclusion that deflates authentic feelings of separation. Fogel is best with small moments of confession and wounded reaction, isolating the lashes of causal misconduct that adds to silent stewing. Watch Life Partners Online in DVD, HD, Performances by Meester and Jacobs keep “Life Partners” in motion, displaying fluid chemistry and timing, credible as friends who want to remain in each other’s lives. Their spark helps the movie work through its deficiencies, lending personality where it counts the most. As vanilla plotting and sameness threaten to take over the feature, the stars utilize their charms and subtleties to find a soul to “Life Partners,” allowing viewers to appreciate the periodically unbearable realities of friendship. Watch Comet Movie Online Now, Imagine you’re watching your relationship on TV. It is playing on five channels, with each channel airing a different stage of the relationship. When things get too uncomfortable, awkward or emotional, you just flip the channel. On that next channel, you’d continue to watch your relationship unfold, maybe from a point a few years later. The cumulative result of the experience would probably put into perspective the whole of what you and another person can be together. Loving in one moment, hateful in another, caring, selfish and more. Watch Comet Online HQ, That metaphor is an elaborate attempt to describe Comet, the directorial debut of Sam Esmail, which had its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival this weekend. Comet stars Emmy Rossum and Justin Long as the central couple. While there is absolutely no TV channel surfing involved, the film’s complex and fascinating structure feels like that, from the audience perspective. It’s a dense, funny, insanely well-written and well-acted film. Unlike most romantic films, it keeps you guessing. Simultaneously, it raises questions about the nature of love, life, and truth, all disguised in an semi-conventional love story told in the most unconventional of ways. It’s a special movie. Watch Comet Online in High Quality, Dell (Long) and Kimberly (Rossum) meet at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. They’re each there to watch a meteor shower, Fate, and Dell’s big mouth, help strike up a relationship. That’s one of five different stories Esmail jumps between, almost at random, throughout the course of the movie. We then see the couple in Paris, on a train, doing the long distance thing and meeting up at an apartment. As the film begins, we don’t know when each of these events take place. We know they’re happier in some times than others, but as the film unfolds, one of its biggest pleasures is the slow reveal of the order of things. Little between Dell and Kimberly unfolds in a traditional manner. Watch Comet Online In HD, We stay invested in these stories because Esmail has written great characters, and the performances are even better. As Kimberly, Rossum is at the top of her game. She gives an award-worthy performance. She’s charming, wacky, somehow attainable, and average, in addition to being appealing and attractive. The balance of wonderful is kind of hard to describe. Long, too, does some of the best work of his career as Dell. He channels the fast-talking portrait of someone you might find in an Aaron Sorkin or David Mamet script, infused with a minor shot of Kevin Smith’s pop culture wit, wrapped around a neurotic emotional center. You can tell Dell is an off-putting guy, but he’s so smart you can’t help but be drawn to him. Esmail has created two wholly original, quirky, but somehow normal characters that Rossum and Long bring to life beautifully. Watch Comet Online For With High Speed, As the film jumps around the timeline, we begin to question the authority of these stories. Are these just from one character’s point of view? Are these things even happening? There’s never a moment where Comet telegraphs what’s next. You’re always engaged, whether you’re piecing together the narrative or unraveling the long, deep conversations Dell and Kimberly have about the nature of everything. Plus, Esmail constantly fills his frame with something for the audience to consider. Characters are rarely viewed in rote medium shots. They’re almost always seen in close-up, or in the corner of the frame, bathed in some elaborate lighting scheme. The film itself is always hinting at the nature of what’s going on, even when it’s not saying it. Watch Comet Online in DVD, HD, But, most of the time, it is saying it. Dell in particular is a verbose and very thoughtful character, but as we live with him for 90 minutes his discussions begin to border on pretentiousness. That’s definitely the point, but it doesn’t make him less annoying from time to time. The writing also contains a lot of repetition and melodrama which, again, is the point, but feels slightly indulgent. It works, but takes away from the overall success of the film.Nevertheless, Comet is a bitter sweet tale of a complicated, fantasy relationship that keeps you guessing and interested from frame one. The performances are outstanding, the directing is top-notch and the writing feels fully realized and stage worthy. A few speedbumps aside, it announces the coming of a new filmmaker to watch: Sam Esmail. Watch Pioneer Movie Online Now, In the early 1980s, an oil reserve was discovered in the North Sea, off the coast of Norway. The problem revolved around this reserve being located over 500 meters below sea level — a depth at which it is incredibly dangerous for divers to build pipelines. The US had the scientific technology and knowledge to produce a gas that would help divers breathe under such pressure, but naturally, would only provide Norway with this gas if they were also given access to the reserve. Watch Pioneer Online HQ, So began a political, scientific and — at times — literal tug of war between the two nations. Erik Skjoldbjærg embellishes these true events to quite an extent in his latest film, Pioneer, but maintains a realistic affectation nonetheless, largely achieved through his quasi-documentary style.Petter (played by Norway’s biggest star, Aksel Hennie) is one of the Norwegian divers trained for the task of laying the necessary pipes, along with his brother Knut (André Eriksen) and a few Americans, including the particularly antagonistic Mike (Wes Bentley). In the aftermath of a preliminary dive gone wrong, it is up to Petter to determine the cause in order to clear his own name, but this soon leads him into a world of political corruption and greedy industrial businessmen that seemingly will stop at nothing to make money. Watch Pioneer Online in High Quality, The cast is generally fantastic, with Hennie standing out in his ability to command our attention with his on-screen presence, and Stephen Lang (“Avatar“) as Ferris, a powerful individual that only becomes more threatening with time.Having co-written the screenplay with four other writers, it seems as though Skjoldbjærg’s biggest mistake is not having enough faith in this style for this story. The beginning of the film is undoubtedly strong, capturing our interest almost immediately with a combination of tight, intense shots, archive footage and extraordinary underwater images. Pioneer generally maintains this style throughout the first half, creating tension and suspense without seeming melodramatic, but soon starts to degenerate into a collection of rushed scenes that attempt to convey the unease of conspiracy but merely seem improbable and contrived. Watch Pioneer Online In HD, A tragic accident that originally shakes us quickly becomes the source of a half-hearted political message and a somewhat careless attempt at a thrilling plot. Again, a lack of faith and investment into one of these avenues is the cause of the film’s failures; either a more thorough examination of political corruption and its ramifications, or a deeper exploration of the psychological battles at play, would greatly benefit the film in terms of engaging the audience. The visual atmosphere of the film is stunning, however, with its period setting allowing for a beautifully gritty filter of blues and greys laid over dark scenery. This aids Skjoldbjærg in creating a sense of distortion and displacement in order to simulate the effects of the gas on Petter — these shots become almost hallucinatory at times, emphasized further by occasional handheld camera work. Watch Pioneer Online For With High Speed, The cinematography of Jallo Faber (who also worked on “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy“) is certainly to be commended, and is made all the more effective by the film’s seamless cuts and transitions. The sound design, on the other hand, is severely lacking in quality by virtue of being overtly present in quantity. With a soundtrack by the band Air, the film seems to rely too heavily on creating emotions through the sensational music, which more often than not simply comes across as overpowering. There were more than a few instances in which I found myself distracted by the music to the point at which it began to detract from my involvement in the film itself. There’s something intriguing about a story presented from an unreliable perspective, and Skjoldbjærg not only understands what this is, but pinpoints and enhances it to maximum effect in Pioneer. Watch Pioneer Online in DVD, HD, His characters work fantastically together, offsetting their qualities to emphasize each of their flaws in the most honest way possible. With a plot that is weakened by its search for quick thrills, however, the film seems to last too long with not much to say about the incredibly interesting dynamics it touches upon. As an addition to the selection of Norwegian films penetrating Hollywood, Pioneer is by no means a weak link, but neither does it reach the potential suggested by its premise. Watch Zero Motivation Movie Online Now, Screening at the upcoming Jewish International Film Festival, Zero Motivation, the excellent début feature from Israeli writer/director Talya Lavie, won the top prize for narrative world cinema at the Tribeca Film Festival. A black comedy addressing the mundanity of Israeli Army base HR management and secretarial duties, it focuses on a unit of female conscripts who find their camaraderie tested by the base’s comings and goings, and are willing to do anything to make their service bearable – while keeping their sanity and dignity. Watch Zero Motivation Online HQ, Set in a remote desert military base, we are introduced to a platoon of female soldiers forced into compulsory office service; including the reckless and insubordinate Zohar (an excellent Dana Ivgy, Cupcakes, Jaffa), her closest rebel-in-arms Daffi (Nelly Tagar, Footnote), the ‘Paper & Shredding NCO’ who has long been conspiring to get a transfer to Tel Aviv, and their commanding officer Rama (Shani Klein), trying hard to rise the ranks but continually foiled by the behaviour of her unit. While deep in paperwork, and continually serving coffee to the men who run the show, these subordinates pass the time by trying to beat their Minesweeper record on the PC, and causing general mischief, while dealing with an array of personal issues that could cause them to combust at any moment. Watch Zero Motivation Online in High Quality, In one of the three interweaving stories, Zohar tries to deal with her virginal status. While on pointless guard duty she meets a handsome male soldier staying on the base, and decides to skimp out of her hefty workload to meet him for a date. In another arc Zohar feels like Daffi has abandoned her when she heads off to Commander School in the hope that she will earn a position in Tel Aviv. Even though she is far from equipped for such a position, conviction is a powerful tool for inspiration. She eventually returns to the base with new responsibility, and her relationship with Zohar is put to the test. Watch Zero Motivation Online In HD, With only their uniform to remind them that they are at war, these are women who care little about their flaws – they are bored, they badmouth their superiors and the emotional strains of frustration and jealousy lead to cunning acts of sabotage. The writing avoids any anti-war message; with Lavie drawing from her own experiences to ensure that there is an authenticity within the satire. It is not all fun and games, though. There is a suicide and a stressful moment where Zohar finds herself sexually threatened and rescued by her mentally disturbed gun-wielding comrade. These bleak developments are opposed by equally funny moments (if you can believe that), and the film’s finale involves the two rivals wielding staple guns as weapons. Ouch. Watch Zero Motivation Online For With High Speed, The feisty performances from the young actresses are all effective; the snarky humour found in the mundane certainly draws some comparisons to Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H. Through the prism of war and compulsory service, Zero Motivation tackles the complexities of female life – feelings of loneliness and hopelessness, untamable desires, and the search for an identity in a ridiculously bureaucratic environment that strips an individual of one. I’m not sure a female-centric black comedy about the Israeli Defense Forces has formerly existed. Well, it does now, and it is a good one. It is a refreshing and witty, and shows a confident handling of conflicting tone and loose, freewheeling narrative storytelling. Watch The Pyramid Movie Online Now, THE PYRAMID is a horror/suspense film that follows a team a father/daughter team of archeologists and a documentary crew into a long-hidden Egyptian pyramid. But uncovering this tomb unleashes far more than they anticipated, as they become lost within the complicated labyrinth, and even worse, are hunted by terrifying ancient creatures. Watch The Pyramid Online HQ, If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from ‘The Descent’, it’s that tight spaces make for good claustrophobic horror. That seems to be the idea behind ‘The Pyramid’, which sends an archaeological team into the depths of an ancient pyramid which has just been unearthed in the Egyptian desert. Aside from the opening scenes, most of the rest of the movie takes place within the narrow corridors or rooms within the pyramid, which in itself does generate a veritable sense of dread. Watch The Pyramid Online in High Quality, Whether it was the intention of screenwriters Daniel Meersand and Nick Simon at the start or that of director Gregory Levasseur later on isn’t clear, but ‘The Pyramid’ follows the recent trend of horror movies in adopting the found-footage format. Largely, that is. The majority of the shots originate from British cameraman Fitzie’s (James Buckley) point of view, which also means that the key characters we see onscreen most of the time are father-and-daughter pair Holden (Denis O’Hare) and Nora (Ashley Hinshaw) and award-chasing filmmaker Sunni (Christa-Marie Nicola). Only when it seems technically possible to have a first-person p.o.v. shot does Levasseur switch to more traditional modes of shot composition and framing, in particular when all but one of the members of the team is left. Watch The Pyramid Online In HD, Truth be told, we’ve never really been a big fan of found-footage horror, in part because most filmmakers use technique as an excuse for poor plotting, thinking that just having their characters run and/or scream down dimly lit hallways and getting surprised by things that jump out at them – and the audience – makes for a movie. To some extent, Levasseur and his writers are guilty of that as well, relying too conveniently on rote jump scares to deliver the thrills, which any seasoned horror fan can probably anticipate when and what is coming at them. Watch The Pyramid Online For With High Speed, But thankfully, the Egyptology-themed setting isn’t completely wasted; the last third of the movie is steeped in religious mythology, in particular the appearance of a part-man part-jackal creature better known in ancient Egyptian history as an “Anubis” and its role in an ancient funerary rite known as the “Weighing of the Heart”. This isn’t the family-friendly adventure that ‘The Mummy’ and its sequels ever was; indeed, coming from producer Alexandre Aja of ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, you should certainly be prepared for some pretty gory shocking scenes, including one that is clearly inspired by an iconic shot from ‘Aliens’ (you know, the one from the back?). Watch The Pyramid Online in DVD, HD, Not all the movie is that intriguing though; for a good part where the group is making its way through the narrow underground tunnels, the pace drags because none of the characters are particularly interesting in and of themselves. What effort spent introducing some conflict between them also falls flat, as Nora’s criticism of Fitzie’s obsession to get their ordeal down on camera is over and done with in just one scene – not least for the fact that she becomes the one to hold on to his camera and document the proceedings after something unfortunate befalls him. Watch The Pyramid Online IPOD, You’ll probably do well lowering your expectations if you’ve decided to watch ‘The Pyramid’, which seems content to revel in B-movie tropes than to be anything truly inspiring by itself. To its credit, it doesn’t entirely squander its titular Egyptian theme, though for that matter, it also doesn’t fully exploit it as well. What longtime Aja screenwriter Levasseur has managed in his directorial debut is to show he can mount a perfectly credible but mediocre found-footage horror, which is only as memorable as the time it takes for another B-grade horror to come along. Watch Wild Online in High Quality, One woman takes the long, hard (and literal) road to self-discovery in Wild, Jean-Marc Vallee's adaptation of the empowering memoir by Cheryl Strayed. A book club favorite and a phenomenon inspiring millions of loyal devotees, the book caught the eye of Reese Witherspoon some years ago, planning at first to merely produce rather than star as the much-younger (at the time) Strayed, but it's to all of our benefit that she took on the role as it's easily the best she's had since her Oscar-winning performance in Walk the Line. Watch Wild Online In HD, Penned by the great novelist Nick Hornby, who has written a book or two about personal redemption, Wild details Strayed's extraordinary 1100-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, an attempt to walk herself away from a history of bad choice and personal tragedies, in hopes of finding the woman she wants to be on the other side. We've seen these kinds of stories before, in fact one very recently in Tracks, which told nearly an identical true-life tale of redemption. The two share much in common from an aesthetic and thematic standpoint, but Wild is the more complete film by far, one that bristles with emotional resonance and enlightenment. Watch Wild Online For With High Speed, Beginning at a moment when her journey has taken an unexpectedly precarious (and bloody) turn, the story then splits two-fold, one in the present and another mostly in flashback. And there are plenty of flashbacks; flashbacks of every kind, in fact, but all are necessary to dot the points in Strayed's life that drove her to make such an audacious decision. She's not a hiker; or at least not an experienced one, and this is a dangerous trek for those who know what they're doing. What's obvious right away is that something terrible must have happened, either to her or caused by her, that led to this. When we see her struggling to even begin the hike, literally stumbling under the weight of her gigantic backpack (nicknamed "monster" by others), we know it's just the start of an arduous ordeal that she may not walk away from. Watch Wild Online in DVD, HD, The particulars of her past are doled out in bits an pieces, flashes of memory blurred with reality. In actuality they aren't all that hard to figure out or understand. We see her loving and forgiving ex-husband (Thomas Sadoski), who she cheated on with multiple men while on a downward spiral of heroine abuse. The root cause of her self-destruction concerns her angelic mother (Laura Dern), whom Strayed both loves and begrudges. It's a little weird to think of Dern as Witherspoon's mother considering how close they are in age, but it works because their relationship they share is closer to that of siblings than mother and daughter. Casting isn't the issue; both women are phenomenal here, in particular Witherspoon in a grueling, captivating performance as vital as anything you'll see all year. Watch Wild Online IPOD, More troublesome is the fractured narrative and redundant use of flashback that makes it difficult for the film to find a steady rhythm. It's a small price to pay for a deeper understanding of Strayed, and we come to see the extent of her self-afflicted heartache. What's even more fascinating is her attitude about the choices she's made, suggesting at one point she'd do it all over again, the drugs and the random hook-ups, not because they inform who she is now but because they were enjoyable. They did what they were supposed to do which is serve as a diversion, but if Strayed wants a future those behaviors simply can't continue. Deeper shades of her personality peek out along the way, especially during her interactions with others, who are almost exclusively men. These encounters add a tinge of danger because, let's face it, she's a woman out alone in the woods surrounded by guys who may not have seen a female in months. So much about Wild works in just the right ways that what doesn't tends to stand out. Strayed's quoting of great poets comes off as a weak attempt at profundity, while the occasional appearance of a spirit animal is a little too on-the-nose for a film that strives so hard to stay grounded elsewhere. Watch Wild Online High Quality, Wild is another bold effort from Vallee, who directed Matthew McConaughey to an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. He seems to have the touch for pulling career-defining performances out of his stars (he gave Emily Blunt her breakout role in The Young Victoria), and Witherspoon proves more than up to the task. Raw, emotionally and physically fatigued, it's great to see her in something meaningful again. She may no longer be America's sweetheart like she was years ago, but roles like this could turn that around real quick. Beautiful panoramic views aside, there's little to the cinematography truly captures the dangerous terrain Strayed must tread; Mother Nature is never the constant threat we would expect her to be. She's not much of a threat at all, really. The real battle is within Strayed, urged by others and sometimes herself to quit; the perseverance she shows is infectious and makes us want to tag along on her journey. Watch Antarctica: A Year on Ice Online in DVD, DivX, What would you think of people who, when coming back from abroad and asked for the first thing they want to do, list these preferences? One wants to walk on the grass in bare feet; another to visit the botanic garden; a third to have an avocado; and a fourth to take a long shower? If these people had been to Europe, you wouldn’t think their first choice upon arriving home would be to go to a garden or to a hot shower or to have an avocado. These are readily available on the Continent. Watch Antarctica: A Year on Ice Online HD , HQ, But if you guessed that these folks came back from months in Antarctica (you looked at the title of the review, didn’t you?), you hit the jackpot.Who would go to such a place, especially in that continent’s winter which lasts for eight months, most of which are in total darkness? For one, rich people who shell out $8,000 for a 10-day cruise with Lindblad, the purpose of which would be to tell everyone back home where they went on their vacation. For the purposes of this documentary, though, the 5,000 people who inhabit the world’s bottom (no pun intended) during the bright months are earning a paycheck. Watch Antarctica: A Year on Ice Online On DVD, They might be scientists, technicians and also the administrative force who do the cooking, the inventory, the loading and unloading of supplies. To give us a better picture of what it’s like at a place that few of us will ever travel to, Anthony Powell spent ten years in the making of this film. Powell shows us Antarctica as though it were inhabited only by the penguins, and he shows us Antarctica as its nature is changed by its multi-national population. What he does not show us is how to pronounce the word. Everyone interviewed, though, leaves the “c” silent. Dictionary.com allows both: silent “c” and vocalized “c.” I prefer the latter because it sound more educated. Watch Antarctica: A Year on Ice Online DVDrip Quality, At the beginning of every summer—that’s October – February when the sun shines 24 hours a day—workers fly into Antarctica largely from Christchurch, New Zealand. Some use planes of the U.S. air force, and each of them saves the aforementioned $8,000 because of employment. We are shown the U.S. base, which is the largest, but also get a glimpse of bases from New Zealand, Russia, South Africa among others. The subjects of the film are not scientists but administrative people. One of the problems from the audience point of view is: Powell does not go into what these folks really do for a living, why their countries hire them, though the term “satellite engineer” slips through. Watch Antarctica: A Year on Ice full movie online, How about more information? It’s nice to see that they party, that they can toss a bottle of water outside in the -40 temperature and have the water turn into ice drops before it hits the snow. It’s nice to know that penguins have the intelligence of chickens, that you can see stars, millions of them it seems, even when nobody knocks you out. It’s fine to see the place bombarded by green light, heartbreaking to note that some seals are stuck out of water and the human beings are prohibited from helping them (let nature take its course). But really, I want to go there without paying $8,000. Where do I apply? Who wants me?And who needs a United Nations when people from the various countries get together for a big New Year’s Eve celebration, all getting along just fine? Couldn’t we fit seven billion of the world’s people on a continent larger than the U.S. and watch us all get along? Direct Watch Antarctica: A Year on Ice Online Full Length, What separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls, is whether you stay in Antarctica during its winter months—without sunlight. The bold people may go somewhat stir-crazy but they’re heroes in the director’s book. At least that is what comes across is this National Geographic-type doc that could have gone more deeply into the personalities of the individuals interviewed. I’d want to know what sort of person takes a dip in the water under these conditions when barely anybody in Coney Island takes part in Brooklyn’s polar bear club, swimming in the Atlantic in January. Watch The Babadook Online DVDrip Quality, Amelia (Essie Davis) is a nurse trying her best to juggle work and raising her young son Samuel (Noah Wiseman). Their relationship has always been strained, largely because Amelia's husband died while driving her to the hospital so that Samuel could be born, but also because Samuel has a number of behavioural problems which repeatedly get him in trouble at school. Watch The Babadook full movie online, One day, Samuel brings Amelia a book for her to read to him. It's a book she has never seen before, and it contains a nursery rhyme about a creature called The Babadook, who takes the form of an impossibly tall man in a black coat, top hat, and who comes complete with distressingly long fingernails. As they read, the story becomes more and more violent, ultimately ending with the monster menacing a young boy who looks suspiciously similar to Samuel. Thus begins the first of many sleepless nights for Amelia, as her house and its occupants are menaced by a being they can't see, who communicates solely through saying its own name in a raspy, bloodcurdling moan. Direct Watch The Babadook Online Full Length, While the haunted house elements of The Babadook call to mind Poltergeist or The Orphanage, the most unnerving aspects have the same nameless dread of Roman Polanski's best work. The second half of the film, which takes place almost entirely within the confines of the house, is reminiscent of the claustrophobia and paranoia Polanski conjured up in Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby, as is the way that the film focuses on the mental deterioration of one woman when faced with terrifying and inexplicable external forces. Writer-director Jennifer Kent does a fantastic job of allowing the terror to build slowly as the scope of the film contracts. As their exposure to the outside world becomes more and more limited, the focus shifts to the two characters we can see and the one we can't, which make the film a suffocating experience. Watch The Babadook Movie Online Now, Like The Exorcist, part of what makes The Babadook so affecting is the way in which it splits the difference between being a horror film and a family drama. Many of the techniques that Kent employs - brief glimpses of the Babadook menacing Amelia at night, terrifying things that only one character can see, manipulation of images on television - are staples of the horror genre, and they are used very effectively to create an atmosphere of creeping unease. What lingers, though, is the dynamic between mother and son as they wrestle with grief over their shared loss, and how that informs their experience. Watch The Babadook Online HQ, Much of the opening stretch of the film, up to and including the discovery of The Babadook's book, consists of Amelia struggled with the very realistic problems of raising a child whose energy cannot be contained, and which tends to manifest itself in destructive acts. That relationship is the heart of the film, not merely because the emotional stakes rest on whether or not this family will survive or be irrevocably harmed by what they go through, but because it informs the conflict with The Babadook. When the creatures starts to mess with things in the house by dropping glass shards into food or scratching out pictures of the late patriarch, Amelia immediately assumes that it must be Samuel acting out. When it begins to exert control over Amelia's behaviour, something which it is able to do more and more as she sleeps less and less, it takes the worst things Amelia thinks about her son and has her say them. It's a deeply human relationship that is put under extraordinary pressure, but that doesn't make it any less real. Watch The Babadook Online in High Quality, The Babadook itself doesn't appear very often - a wise choice considering that it's a creature which sounds a lot scarier than it looks - so much of the terror comes from the actors reacting to each other and the weird changes occurring in their environment. Noah Wiseman occasionally struggles to be convincingly bratty during the first act, but becomes much more natural as the film becomes more unnatural and he has to register a profound fear of the unknown. Wiseman clearly finds it easier to imagine a monster than to act like one, which probably reflects very well on him as a person, but does make some of the scenes focused on Samuel's problems feel awkward and out of step with the rest of the film. Watch The Babadook Online In HD, Fortunately, Wiseman is paired with an actress giving such a marvelous performance that he can't help but be buoyed by her. Essie Davis gives an astounding and transformative performance which sees her turn from a stressed but hardworking single mother into a deeply paranoid figure who is desperately unsure of her own sanity. Since part of the Babadook's curse involves influencing the behaviour of its victims, Davis often has to switch between a loving mother at the end of her rope to a prototypical evil stepmother type, something she does without losing the essence of her character. The film is so effective as a drama because you are forced to root for and against the same woman depending largely on how she conducts herself in a given moment. She is both villain and victim, constantly at war with her desire to save her son and the way she is being forced to act. It makes the last act, in which The Babadook makes its presence more clearly felt, riveting. Watch The Babadook Online For With High Speed, Horror's a very subjective thing, and if ghost stories don't really do much for you, The Babadook might not terrify you the way that it did me. But even if you were never scared of things that go bump in the night - in which case you are probably some sort of monster anyway - The Babadook is still one of the best horror films in years because it grounds so much of its scares in human emotions and in a relationship that feels uncomfortably real. It's a deeply unsettling and brilliantly constructed examination of grief and loss which comes hidden beneath the imposing shadow of a monster from the deepest recesses of childhood. Watch Remote Area Medical Online DVDrip Quality, In this case, the RAM team is spending a weekend in Bristol, Tennessee, not terribly far from their Knoxville headquarters. They set up shop at the racetrack, hand out tickets at 3:30am - which would seem early except that some cars have been waiting for days - and then at 7am sharp they take people in the order that they arrive. Many are there for routine checkups, mammograms, and the like, while some have more specific symptoms. A large number are there for eye exams and dental care; there are facilities on-hand to manufacture glasses and dentures. Roughly two thousand people will be examined by the volunteer physicians on-hand. Watch Remote Area Medical full movie online, That dental and vision are so prominent may be surprising to some in the audience, but perhaps it shouldn't be. As much we often tend to think of health care in reactive terms - not necessarily emergency services, but something done after a problem has shown itself - filmmakers Jeff Reichert and Farihah Zaman have the patients receiving that kind of assistance explain how a degenerative gum disease that leave's one's teeth a mess can certainly make it difficult to get a job that involves dealing with people, or how not being able to see well enough to read can undermine a person's confidence. There are bits where people talk about what health care costs and what it should cost, sure, but if Remote Area Medical makes any contribution to the debate about affordable health care, it's in framing it as something that improves everyday life as opposed to just something needed in bad situations. Direct Watch Remote Area Medical Online Full Length, Reichert & Zaman spend a little time with certain patients before and after the clinic, and they tend to be a sympathetic, likable bunch; occasionally unsophisticated, but easy to relate to. Other subjects aggressively push their way into the movie, and while that's sometimes abrasive - for as much as this visit often reflects wounded pride to the first group, it's easy to see the latter as responding to charity by demanding more - it does just as often highlight the desperation these people feel. It can be a litmus test for the audience, too - do they remember the several people who leave with tears of gratitude, or the woman who is shown a very cloudy x-ray of her lungs and smokes a cigarette on her way out, telling her husband she's not going to change any habits? Watch Remote Area Medical Movie Online Now, It takes a lot of patience to deal with things like that, and the filmmakers have a lot of time and praise for the volunteers. Interestingly, they don't spend much time on RAM founder Stan Brock - they have him tell the story of having an emergency in South America that led to the creation of the organization, but he is almost treated as a mascot through much of the picture (though still energetic, he is an older guy now). The folks actually giving care get more screen time, and wile some have stories of how and why they hooked up with the organization, we mostly get an idea of their makeup by watching them work and seeing how this differs from normal medical practice. One doctor points out he wouldn't do certain procedures in his office for liability reasons; another drives his own trailer truck. A jeweler gets pressed into service making dentures. Watch Remote Area Medical Online HQ, Zaman & Reichert are skilled at giving the audience these fairly quick but revealing glimpses of their subjects; the audience might not know anybody well by the end of the picture, but it's got a good sense of many people. They also do a fine job of communicating the scale of the operation, whether it be showing how crowded the parking lot is getting hours before opening or showing a long line of dentists' chairs. They use their locations well, too - for as much as the headquarters in Knoxville is humble, there's something about an polished but empty stadium (or, in this case, racetrack) that implies something about a community's priorities when contrasted with people who have little. Of course, it complements the upbeat, can-do montage of the RAM crew rolling out to set up shop in Bristol. |
